I am buying a new digital camera. Is it worth the extra money for higher optical zoom? 4x vs 12x?

I'll probably buy the Canon Powershot. One version has 6.0 Megapixels with 12x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. The other option is 7.1 megapixels, but lower optical and digital zoom. How to choose?
