Camera Gray
Looking for a semi-professional video camera?

I am looking for a decent HDV camera, something in the gray area between professionals and amateurs, and not sure what to get as many floating around. Obviously I want something with a microphone connector and the ability to switch around goals and filters. I own a decent budget, but not unlimited. Any opinions?

Nu'uanu has given you some great options, but I can not say that I agree with some of them. Consumer camcorders that are listed are great! I could not agree more. But I have to disagree with him, with professional video cameras. First, I would never recommend the Sony FX1 and FX7 as a good average level options. Do not get me wrong, they produce excellent image, but lacks many vital functions. The Most obvious is XLR mic. The FX1 and FX7 do not. Sure, Nu'uana has pointed this out, but again, I agree with his reasoning. First Instead, I would never recommend relying on XLR adapters permanently, as performed by Beachtek. A $ 170, are horribly unreliable. Break in the first year or two, and with a high repair costs (25-30% of original cost). Save yourself the problem and whether to put a professional video camera, go to the end and get one with XLR inputs. The Sony FX1 and FFX7 also missing a 24p mode. 24p., O 24 Progressive Scan is a feature that simulates analog film into a digital Camcoder, with what artistic look withough having to buy a camera Panavision $ 500,000. Secondly, I would never recommend the Sony HVR-A1U. Period. Especially as a professional video camera. It can be very attractive because of its favorable characteristics such as XLR microphone inputs and HD. All this for around $ 2,000! However, I do not like this camera. My main reason for saying this is because it has 1 image sensor, a CMOS sensor. Like 1-chip video camera, its more of a camcorder of steroids. Many people do not believe me, but 3 image sensors is a defining characteristic of a professional video camera, if your CCD or CMOS. 3 tabs gives much better color saturation, and color reproduction. Beyond that, the response is very credible Nu'uana:) And although I do not mean. My advice for what look for in a mid-level pro camcorder is not this (arranged in a particular order: 1) True 1920 x 1080. (not as many consumer HD camcorders-wannabe) 2) 3 image sensors (3 CCD or CMOS 3) and in LEAs 1 / 3 "chips, but the bigger the better. 3) dual XLR inputs 4) 24 Progressive Scan (24p) 5) Manual Control (Focus, aperture, white balance, shutter speed). The rule is more or less for video cameras that is all that can think of. I recommend you look at the Canon XH-A1 (if your budget $ 3300). It is an excellent camera, inexpensive for a prosumer camera, however, is packed with features that make it better than most cameras of thousands of dollars more. It's probably the most popular camera among professionals and consumers. If you want something a little more professional touch (not that the XH-A1 is not professional, very pro!) I would recommend the GY-HD110U or step up-HD200U GY (in $ 4,000 and $ 5,700 respectively). They have an advantage that most sub-$ 10,000 cameras do not have interchangeable lens mount, which means that you can use different lenses. This is a great advantage for those who want greater flexibility when it comes to zoom and depth of field. You can also get the best image quality any HDV camcorder. Many people are a little skeptical about the JVC camera and I, but this camera is very reliable, and not disappoint. My recommendation end is a camera that is not well known. It's called Scarlet Red. However, it is still available, is to be published in early 2009. Was made by a relatively new to the world of cameras, Oakley, also known as the makers of sunglasses. However, we must not underestimate them. His first pitch of the Red One is a camera $ 17,500 Sonys rivaling the cost of a quarter to half a million $$!!! The Red One double images produced in high definition resolution !!!!! Thats shooting 4K. Now, on the scarlet, which is almost the price of Red One, but has some striking feature. It is expected to be sold by less than $ 3,000 and is designed specifically for consumer use and indie filmmaker, and shoots himself in the 3K! That's still considerably better than their record typical hard 1080p (1920 x 1080) camcorder. I can not guarantee that the Red Scarlet will be a revolutionary camera, as Red is a bit of testing, but definitely is something worth looking into.
